Enemies of Evangelism

Dr. Mike Johnston

[The following letter was inspired from an actual piece of correspondence from a man who was highly incensed by my suggestion that Christians need to be Sharing Jesus and winning souls for Christ]

Dear Enemy of Evangelism:

You gave me your opinion, now here is mine.

Your opposition to evangelism is devious. You apparently have never been burdened to lead a soul to Christ and yet HERE YOU ARE in typical lackey Laodiceanism, extremely burdened to mock, malign, and oppose all evangelistic efforts of me and those like me.

How telltale don’t you think?

What kind of a person would pit himself against soul winning through sharing the Gospel of Christ with Hell bound sinners in an effort to get them saved?

Well, a secularist would. An atheist would. A mooslim would. A Bible mocker would. An anti-Christ would. A liberal would. But would a committed born again Christian oppose bringing people to Jesus?

NOT A CHANCE!  BUT YOU DID! So what does that reveal about you? [I’ll let anyone who reads this connect the dots]

So what’s your alternative to soul winning? To simply live a “good life” before the world and by that alone cross your fingers hoping sinners will flock to YOUR expiated example?

Let’s pursue this for a moment:

How does your “good example” tell lost sinners they’re headed to Hell? (Rom. 3:10, 23; 6:23).

How does your “good example” tell them that while we were sinners Christ shed His precious blood and died for us (Rom. 5:8; Eph 2:13; Col. 1:20)?

How does your “good example” tell these unsaved folks that “whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom. 10:13)?

The fact is your “good example” doesn’t do any more than the “good example” of a Buddhist, a monk, a Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, or any other “religious” zealot who happens to be a moral person now does it!

Time for you to awaken to Scripture.

Whether you like it or not, verbally sharing Jesus with people is Biblical. One of the first things Andrew did was bring his brother Peter to Jesus (John 1:40-42). Now imagine if Andrew had listened to an enemy of evangelism like you?

As much as this flies in the face of your feckless proclamations, evangelism by preaching to the lost is mandated in the Word of God and the last time I read Scripture, those who know what to do and refuse are living in sin (James 4:17).

The Lord Jesus commissioned the disciples as follows: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  (16)  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:15-16).

As inconvenient as this is for the enemies of evangelism, this commissioning requires preaching and seeks conversions followed up by baptism; something I’m certain you’ve never done. Whether a man preaches to one person or a thousand, the conversion of the lost by SHARING JESUS is mandated in Scripture.

Paul’s words here will stick a paw in your craw I’m sure:

Romans 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Here’s a perfect – argument crushing – illustration. Peter preached an evangelistic message at Pentecost and three thousand got saved:  Acts 2:14  But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: Acts 2:41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. [Remember, this would not have happened if Andrew had listened to an enemy of evangelism like YOU]

Lastly, here’s a final problem presented by your pompous pontifications …

Jude 1:23  And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

How many souls has your “good living” pulled out of the fire?

What about at the death bed of a family member or friend who wasn’t converted by your “good example?”

I guess you don’t know and I’ll bet you’re proud of that too, eh?

In case you aren’t clever enough to have figured it out by now, you are more than a mere disappointment; you are absolutely disgusting. Instead of trying to convince you of something you are spiritually incapable of acknowledging, I’m going to deal with you as Scripture commands:

Titus 3:10-11 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; (11) Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

With that I bid you a forever FAREWELL! [blocked]
