Jehovah’s Witnesses: 5 Most Egregious Heresies

Now the spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (1 Tim. 4:1).

What is a cult? Christians might say a cult is any religious organization claiming the infallibility of their literature and leaders and that adds to or subtracts from the authority of Jesus Christ and the Word of God.

One characteristic most damaging to divergent factions is their uncanny ability to keep their followers persuing lies when confronted with facts. Pontus Pilate is a prime example. He stood face to face with Jesus and asked what is truth (John 18:38). This is the work of Satan (2 Cor. 4:4).

Today we can probably identify a few hundred groups qualifying as cults, but few are as insidious and soul-damning as the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs). Founded in 1870s by a Pennsylvania clothing merchant named Charles Taze Russell (CTR), this group now propagates some of the slickest, and insidious errors you will find anywhere. [1]

Error #1:

JWs Claim Sole Ownership of “Christian” Truth

Mr. Russell, a former Pennsylvania clothing merchant, and reported Freemason of the highest order, [2]  began his infamous empire as a budding 18 year old congregationalist turned 7th Day Adventist Bible teacher who argued that Satan had seized control of “the church.” Once armed with the skewed writings of Ellen G. White, Joseph Smith,  and a condemned 3rd century heretic named Arius, Russell formally announced to the world that he was now the sole prophet and voice of Jehovah.

But was he? His long list of failed predictions [3]  declare not (Deut. 18:20-22), nor did his ex-wife who exposed his penchant for pedophilia in divorce court. [4]

Still, this scandalous, tell-tale history does little more than ruffle the feathers of JWs who scream foul at those decrying it. Yet for fearful JWs cover up prevails and they are getting quite good at it, too. When their own members are accused of child sexual abuse, they ignore it just as they do the charges of CTR. [5]  Could it be the apple doesn’t rot far from the tree?

In spite of these and other appalling yet unanswered accusations, they go on. Adding as many as 300,000 naïve neophytes annually, they are now pushing toward 6 million worldwide. As expected, this keeps the printing presses at Bethel (Brooklyn Heights Watchtower) feverishly spewing millions of pamphlets and books in dozens of languages, all based on one scurrilous “bible” no Hebrew or Greek scholar in the world could ever (or has ever) endorsed, [6] called  The New World Translation (NWT). While they refuse to disclose the names of credentials of their obvious slip shod translation committee, this book is the unrivaled fountainhead of their fabrications, serving as the sole basis for sending more people to Hell than anything else they– or anyone else– has ever published.

Error #2: JWs Deny the Deity of Jesus  Christ

Satan hates Jesus! It should come as no surprise that he would seek to undermine the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow  (Phil. 2:9-10).

In the Garden, the subtle serpent launched an attack on the credibility of God’s Word with Yea, hath God said (Gen. 3:1)? Today he asks: Is Jesus really God? [7]

Yet with that question comes the epitome of conundrums. For, if Jesus is not the incarnation of God as cults like JWs forcefully demand, then He is also not worthy of following, nor is the Word of God worth believing, since both strongly testify to His position in the triune Godhead (Gen. 1:26; Matt: 3:16-17; 28:18-20; John 14:26 w/15:26, Rev. 17:14; 19:16, and dozens more).

The denial of Christ’s deity is part of the banquet of blasphemy spread out by JWs. Their website, like their literature, leaves readers with the impression they should swallow everything simply because JWs have cooked it up.  But the original languages disagree, as well as every credible Bible translation in the world. Belief in Christ’s deity has distinguished Christians from cults for nearly 2,000 years (easily provable if you will honestly inquire). The true Church agrees with the Apostle John who said the Word was God (John 1:1), Thomas who called Christ my Lord and my God (20:28), and of course Paul who taught that Jesus was God . . . manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16).

Let me offer you an independent challenge. Get a Hebrew Greek dictionary (Strong’s or Young’s Exhaustive) and see this for yourself.  Much of the New World Translation isn’t even close. One can only conclude they produced it merely to reinforce the false doctrines that cannot be defended in any other way.  Drs. Ankerberg and Weldon wrote: “such a translation must not be trusted because of its unrelenting biases.”

Take John 1:1 as an example. If Jesus is “a god” as claimed by NWT translators, then there are many gods out there. So, what kind of god is Christ? A god of lightening and thunder? Crops? Is this not what Rome taught– or worse-the Canaanites?

The Greek is plain: “ho (the) logos (Word) en (was) theos (God).” Who is right, the JWs who insert words and ideas that aren’t defensible, or the original Greek? Greek Scholar Marvin R. Vincent writes:

The Logos of John is the real, personal God (Joh_1:1), the Word, who was originally before the creation with God, and was God, one in essence and nature, yet personally distinct (Joh_1:1, Joh_1:18); the revealer and interpreter of the hidden being of God; the reflection and visible image of God, and the organ of all His manifestations to the world. Compare Heb_1:3. He made all things, proceeding personally from God for the accomplishment of the act of creation (Heb_1:3), and became man in the person of Jesus Christ, accomplishing the redemption of the world. Compare Phi_2:6. (Vincent’s Word Studies)

Here is another problem for JWs. Throughout the NT, Jesus is referred to as the Lord, and three times as the Lord of lords (1 Tim. 6:15; Rev. 17:14; 19:16). However, in the OT, it is Jehovah that is the Lord of lords (Deut. 10:17; Psa. 136:3).  This is a real chicken bone in the throat for JWs my friend.

In the OT, the Hebrew name of God (YHWH) appears over 6,500 times. The way the language is written, makes it impossible to accurately pronounce it, so it has been written Jehovah. In order to distinguish Jehovah from God’s other names (Elohim, Adonai) they spelled LORD in cap letters. The NT Greek manuscripts do not use this Hebrew name but abbreviate it Jah. When NT writers quoted OT passages regarding Jehovah, the English word Lord was used for the Greek word kurios (Luke 1:32, 68; 1 Pet. 3:15; etc). This same divine title kurios was given to Christ 115 times:  kurious Iesous, LORD Jesus (Luke 24:3; Rom. 5:1; etc).  The NT writers willingly embraced what JWs woefully eschew:  our Jehovah Jesus!

Now a question: Is it not theologically proper and far more honest to just allow the Greek to say what it really says? Jesus is God, manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16). He came to earth to reveal God to man (Isa. 7:14; 9:6-7; Matt. 1:23; John 1:1-14; 14:7-9), and redeem man to God (Matt. 20:28; Luke 19:10). Apart from that, there is no other explanation for His appearance here my friend.

The Pharisees, like JWs were very religious. They attended weekly meetings, studied scripture, scoured the planet for converts, and they spoke reverently about Jehovah. They even believed He was going to visit earth via the virgin birth to establish His kingdom (Isa. 7:14; 9:6-7), and make them His witnesses (Isa. 43:10, 12; 44:8). However, when Immanuel, God with us (Matt. 1:23 see Isa. 7:14; 9:6-7) showed up (in a stable) in Bethlehem as prophesied (Mic. 5:2, etc), they had become so callously indoctrinated against Him by their teachers, they rejected Him for who He really was: over all, God (Rom. 9:5).

Jesus provides a stern warning about those who deny His deity. Quoting from the Greek version of the Old Testament (Septuagint) God told Moses– I am that I am (Ex. 3:14). Jesus warned:  If ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sin (John 8:24).  That warning now extends to JWs, and of course, to you. If you don’t believe Jesus is God, you are deceived and doomed forever.

Error #3: JWs Deny the Physical Resurrection of Christ

Without the bodily resurrection of Christ we have no salvation. Paul labeled this a soul-damning heresy: Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: . . .  And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. (excerpted from 1 Cor. 15:15-17).

Prior to the ascension to glory in His resurrected body (Acts 1:9-11), Jesus  had personally appeared in a physical body that was seen, handled, hugged, and examined thoroughly. John wrote: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life (1 John 1:1).

Jesus presented His resurrected Body for proof many times after crucifixion. Behold my hands and my feet, that it is 1myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have (Luke 24:39). He invited Thomas: Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing (John 20:27). Nothing further need be said. There is no suggestion of anything but a bodily resurrection. The tomb was empty. If we reject the physical resurrection of Christ we will have to destroy the whole of the New Testament. If we insist that it was the spirit of Christ and not the body that rose, then there was no resurrection of the body for any of us since the spirit does not die but ascends to the Lord (Ecc. 12:7; 2 Cor. 5:6-8).

Error #4: JWs Teach Soul-Sleep and No Hell

To tell the unrepentant wicked they won’t be punished for their evil is a soul damning heresy.

It is also to call in question the truthfulness of Jesus Christ, which alone would render Him unworthy of following.

The KJV Bible translators mistranslated hell from Sheol and Hades (the place of the dead) the fact of weeping and gnashing of teeth in eternal torment is very real (Matt. 8:12; Luke 13:28). This has given license to cults who lessen Christ’s warning about the horrors of hell fire.

The word “hell” from the Greek Gehenna is used twelve times in the New Testament, 11 times by Jesus Christ Himself. People there are pictured suffering- alive and conscious; the dead do not sleep. All dead are living somewhere and are conscious after their departure from earth. Abraham, Samuel, Moses, Elijah, and the martyrs of Revelation Six were all alive, and active after death. Paul, in 2 Cor. 5:8 says, Absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Sheol (OT Hebrew name) and Hades (NT Greek name) was actually a place or state of the dead (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). While OT believers considered Sheol the grave and the pit where no one knew anything, Jesus shed light on it by revealing Hades as a dual compartment where both the saved and unsaved were held alive (Luke 16:19-31). Lazarus was alive and being comforted by Abraham, and the rich man was alive and tormented in the flame.

Since this easily disproves soul sleep JWs (as well as other cults) have turned this into a parable hoping it would just go away. But again the Greek language won’t allow for it. On the cross, Jesus promised a dying thief he would—that day—be with Him in paradise (Luke 23:43). Later, He personally paraded him and a host of OT saints through Jerusalem and on to glory (Matt.  27:52-53).  What a sight that was eh?

In Phil. 1:23, Paul says, To depart, and to be with Christ is far better. Does it make sense to depart and be unconscious? Is that somehow better? No, it is better to be with Him, for we will be as He is. Jesus promised that God is not the God of the dead but the living (Matt. 22:32). If soul sleep is true, this verse, among many others cannot be. [8]

Error #5: JWs Teach the Doctrine of a Second Chance

In their dark history, JWs have unashamedly violated every clear law of Biblical exegesis to the point that their credibility is no longer in question. It doesn’t exist.  This, however, is one of the most cunning. JWs teach that upon death, we all get a second chance at eternal life. This is as unbiblical (Hebrew-Greek) as it is absurd. For what motive would there be to even join their cult if we all can live it up now and enjoy eternal life later? But worse that that, imagine this. Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, and the whole sordid crew, in Heaven despite their unfathomable atrocities. Admittedly, if this is true, Christians are the ones in trouble because Jesus lied, Paul lied, and God the Father played a cruel hoax on God the Son by punishing Him so severely for the sin of the world (Isa. 52:13-53:12). The beating and bloodshed was for nothing!

Please listen. This is the only chance at eternal life we have my friend, and this is your moment: Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Cor. 6:2). He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life (1 John 5:12). Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Rom. 10:13). Will you?

[2] Original Watchtower publications displayed the Cross and Crown symbol which was the Masonic Knight’s Templar logo. His tombstone is an 8’ pyramid with the Knight’s Templar symbol on it. The Masonic Headquarters is nearby. See extensive info: http://www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm261599.html.

[3] After dozens of false prophesies about Christ’s return, etc, he finally got smart and told folks they were spiritual visitations and thus un-viewable.

[4] Much to the chagrin of JWs, this info is everywhere if you google: “Russell child molester.” Now, please understand. Those of you that will throw Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and Ted Haggard under the bus must admit, Bakker and the boys were not the Founders of Christianity, Jesus is (Matt. 16:18). While we admit Russell was never convicted in court (nor were Swaggart and Haggard) at least they confessed and repented of their sin, something Mr. Russell never did.

[5] As reported by JWs ex-elder William Bowen who left the faith when repeated charges were ignored -http://www.watchtowerinformationservice.org/bowen.html

[6] You cannot find one credible Hebrew/Aramaic-Greek scholar anywhere on the planet that endorses this beguiling bunch of baloney. Try it, there aren’t any!
