Sodom and Gomorrah –Decadence – Deception – Destruction

Mike Johnston

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly . . . Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire (Genesis 13:13; Jude 1:7).

Sodom and Gomorrah were thriving merchant centers in a morally decadent, politically sympathetic culture. By the time of Abraham God had labeled their activities as grievous and exceedingly wicked (Gen. 13:13), and had scheduled their destruction (Gen. 19). Abraham’s nephew Lot lived as one writer puts it  amidst sexual filth and moral rot (2 Pet. 2:6-7) where his soul was tormented daily by what he saw and heard (2 Pet. 2:8). But Lot was a greedy compromiser and he wouldn’t leave on his own, so God had to forcibly evacuate him.

The word sodomy is derived from the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in chapters 18 and 19 of the Book of Genesis in the Bible. The Lord had all He could tolerate of the filthy sexual perversions committed by the men of these cities and He (along with two angels) personally visited His servant Abraham to warn him of the impending doom: “the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous” (Genesis 18:20). He then dispatched the angels to deliver Lot and his family before the judgment could begin (Gen. 19:22). However, when the angels arrived, something very perverted took place: “But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know (have sex with) them” (Gen 19:4-5). God’s destruction was swift and the Bible records it as a woeful warning for all who will listen: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 1:7).

Sodomite supporters think that by listing other sins and abominations in the OT it justifies the vile perversions of sodomites. Far from it! God repeated His disdain for- and judgment of- sodomites in the New Testament every time the word fornication is used. Moreover, there are several passages listing the perverts of Sodom and Gomorrha as examples of filth and perversion in the end times and lifestyles to be avoided at all cost: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 1:7; see also 2 Pet. 2:6-8; Rom. 1:24-28; 1 Cor. 6:9-19).

Sodom and Sodomites: From the Word of God

While sodomites (aka homosexuals) want us to believe their lifestyles are normal and acceptable to God, they do so emotionally with contrived statistics and skewed Bible interpretations that will never pass the smell test. The fact is sodomy is a perversion. Moreover, while there are scores of male and female relationships delineated for us, God never once endorses sodomy, nor can you find one clear instance where it is ever presented in a positive light.

Here are a few Biblical descriptions of sodomites and their despicable culture we’ll refer to as Sodom.

They were wealthy

(Genesis 13:10)  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.  (Genesis 13:13) But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

They were well organized

They elected leaders: (Genesis 14:2) That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

They protested in the streets: (Genesis 19:4)  But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

They played the victim card: (Genesis 19:9) . . . This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge. They use violence to achieve their goals: (Genesis 19:9) . . . now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

They were sexually perverse

(Genesis 18:20)  And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; (Genesis 19:4-5)  But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:  (5)  And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. (Deuteronomy 23:17) There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel. (Deuteronomy 32:32)  For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: (Isaiah 1:9)  Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

They were rebellious

(Genesis 19:9)  And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. (Isaiah 1:10)  Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. (Jeremiah 23:14)  I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah. (Zephaniah 2:9)  Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. (see Genesis 18:26-33 where Abraham couldn’t find 10 righteous men)

They were disgraceful

(Deuteronomy 32:32)  For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:

They were lawless

(Isaiah 1:10)  Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

They were branded

(Isaiah 1:9)  Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:19)  And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (Jeremiah 49:18)  As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. (Jeremiah 50:40)  As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. (Amos 4:11)  I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. (Matthew 10:15)  Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. (Matthew 11:23)  And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. (Matthew 11:24)  But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. (Mark 6:11)  And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. (Luke 10:12)  But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. (Romans 9:29)  And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. (2 Peter 2:6)  And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; (Jude 1:7)  Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

They were destroyed

(Genesis 19:24)  Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; (Genesis 19:28)  And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. (Deuteronomy 29:23)  And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah . . . which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath. (Luke 17:29)  But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. (2 Peter 2:6)  And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly. (Jude 1:7)  Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Summary

To be brutally honest, I don’t give a toss about your feelings on this subject! The fact is, if you can’t back it up with Scripture, then you haven’t a leg to stand on with the High Court. In light of that, I will allow you an opportunity to answer the following questions with Bible references:

  1. Where in Scripture is sodomy (homosexuality) approved?
  2. Where in Scripture are Sodom and Gomorrah (2 Pet. 2:7; Jude 1:7) ever set forth as model cities to follow?
  3. Where in Scripture do we find that marriage can be between two people of the same sex?
  4. Where in Scripture is sodomy ever portrayed in a positive light.
