ANSWERING THE ACCUSATION THAT THE NT NEVER CONDEMNS SODOMITES aka Homosexuals
Opening precis statement: the Bible explicitly endorses heterosexual marriage alone. It never provides a single positive reference to homosexuality, and every reference to sodomy is clearly negative.
The fact is, telling the truth today is the new hate crime. But how can I as a Christian claim to love someone for whom I won’t warn using God’s own words that are frighteningly clear?
I understand that having a family member trapped in a lifestyle God condemns often causes their loved ones to want to justify them by supplanting God’s word with their personal feelings. However, “feeling” that something is ok when God’s Word tells us it is wrong is not only foolish, it is disrespectful, dangerous, and disobedient. The Bible makes it clear that homosexuality isn’t acceptable in any way, shape or form and nowhere in Scripture is it ever portrayed in a positive light.
If you know of one, please show me.
The Old Testament is very clear about the sin of sodomy (homosexuality):
Leviticus 18:22-30 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (23) Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. (24) Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: (25) And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. (26) Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: (27) (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;) (28) That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you. (29) For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. (30) Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
God never changes and neither does His Word (Mal. 3:6; Psalm 119:89). That of course includes the topic of homosexuality. The truth is, wherever sodomy (aka homosexuality) is mentioned in Scripture, it is always in the context of decadence, disdain, and dishonor (Gen. 18:20; Deut. 32:27; Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Kings 14:24; 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kings 23:7; Rom. 1:22-28; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10). You cannot find one clear instance in Scripture where the homosexual or lesbian lifestyle is permitted or presented in a positive light. Not one!
Still, there are numbers of defiant, pro-homosexual groups leading thousands to Hell by falsely claiming God’s Word condones sodomy when from cover to cover it is unabashedly condemned:
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. . . . If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death (Lev 18:22; 20:13; see Romans 1:24-28; 1 Cor. 6:9; ).
Here’s what Scripture says about homosexuality:
· It is a sin (Lev. 18:22; 1 Cor. 6:9)
· It is grievous wickedness (Gen. 18:20)
· It must not be practiced (Lev. 18:22)
· It is detestable (Lev. 18:22; 20:13)
· It was a capital crime (Lev. 20:13)
· It is degrading (Rom. 1:24)
· It is a lie (Rom. 1:25)
· It is shameful (Rom. 1:26, 27)
· It is against the natural way (Rom. 1:26)
· It isn’t normal (Rom. 1:27)
· It brings about due penalty (Rom. 1:27)
· It can cause you to lose out on the Kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9)
The New Testament is also clear about its condemnation of homosexuality. The NT uses the word fornication(s) translated from the Greek word “porneia” 26 times. Thayer’s Greek definitions defines this as: “adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc” which perfectly coincides with Lev. 18.
Paul condemned men with men and women with women:
Romans 1:26-28 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: (27) And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. (28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (10) Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Peter condemned the activities of Sodom and Gomorrha which the Lord Jesus warned would reappear in the end times (Luke 17:26-30):
2 Peter 2:4-10: “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness …” (cf. Jude 5-6)
And Jude agrees with Peter’s assessment and condemnation of sodomy:
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.The NT uses the word *fornication(s) translated from the Greek word “porneia” 26 times. Many also wrongly claim Jesus never condemned sodomy. But He did at least 3 times even warning it would be a sign of the last days:
1. The Lord Jesus said:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (Matthew 5:17). The Law condemns homosexuality: Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22; see Lev. 20:13)
2. He said any sex outside of marriage is wrong:
For out of the heart proceed . . . *fornications . . . (20) These are the things which defile a man: (Matthew 15:19-20) [*Greek word translated fornications is “porneia” which is defined by Thayer’s Greek definitions as: “adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc.”]
3. He later defined marriage as follows:
Matthew 19:4-5 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, (5) And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Moreover, The Lord Jesus warned about the reappearance of Sodomites as a Sign of End times:
Luke 17:26-30: “And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”
Part of the process of repentance is coming to the reality that one is a sinner needing forgiveness and change. While I sympathize with those having loved ones caught up in the homosexual lifestyle, by telling them it’s ok you not only misrepresent the Bible, but you are adding to the judgment God warns He will unleash upon them at the Great White Throne (Rev. 20:11-15).
Please- for the sake of love and your loved one, rethink your position and tell him or her the truth.
