Serpent Seed Heresy

Dr. Mike Johnston

Serpent seed, dual seed or two-seedline is a controversial minority teaching in Christianity (and rarely Judaism) that the serpent in the Garden of Eden had sexual intercourse with Eve, and that Cain was the offspring of the union. This differs from the more common religious belief that Cain was the son of Adam and Eve (the first humans). Today it is often associated with parts of the Christian Identity movement holding that Jews are the descendants of Cain and thus the serpent. The idea has also existed in several other contexts, and major proponents include(d) Daniel Parker (1781-1844), William M. Branham (1909-1967), Arnold Murray, and sadly, EW Bullinger [1](December 15, 1837 – June 6, 1913).

The doctrine that Eve mated with the serpent, or with Satan, to produce Cain also appears in early Gnostic writings such as the Gospel of Philip; however, this teaching was explicitly rejected as heresy by Irenaeus and later mainstream Christian theologians. The result of the heresy, which is part of the overarching mystery of iniquity (that) doth already work (2 Thess. 2:7) appears to be nothing more than a spiritually legal way to justify racism; most especially anti-semiticism.

While serpent seed lies have been bantered about for several years, it was occultist William Branham that became one of its chief proponents. Branham, a wild eyed spiritist was the most widely known minister of the 20th century to actually teach serpent seed in its modern malignancy: the fall of mankind resulted from Eve having sexual intercourse with an upright Beast whom Adam had named ‘Serpent’.

This is how it is presented by Aryan Nation, Interestingly, deception in any form requires two things Eve did when dealing with the devil: deleting from the Word of God, and adding to it. She left out freelywhich is how God commanded them to eat (Gen. 2:2) and she added touch (Gen. 3:3), which He never mentioned.  Serpent seed (according to Bullinger’s Companion Bible) depends on this word to set forth this heresy that Scripture doesn’t teach.

The serpent seed doctrine is a mainstay for many heretics and cultists through the years. Because of his wide acclaim in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s, William Branham was widely followed in Charismatic and Pentecostal [2]movements and to a lesser degree by Methodists and Baptists. His meetings which featured clairvoyance, divination (word of knowledge), and false miracles were well attended by hundreds of thousands of people around the world which paid homage to his heresies. Not surprisingly, this popularity and influence gave him the best platform of all adherents of the serpent seed doctrine to spread it to the masses who’d become mesmerized by his madness.

SUMMARY TRUTH: Those teaching the Serpent Seed are serpents themselves. Cain was conceived as Scripture tells us: Genesis 4:1  And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. Eve did NOT have sex with the Serpent producing the Jewish (Hebrew) race. They descended from Shem, Noah’s second son, who is traced back to Seth and NOT Cain.  However, just so you can understand how dangerous this heterodoxy really is, please follow this to its logical conclusion: to believe the serpent seed lie that Jews are descendents of Satan is to equate Christ (from the tribe of Judah) to a Luciferic origin. Is this really what you want to face Almighty God believing my friend?

[1]Bullinger was for the most part a sound dispensational teacher and his books and essays are generally trustworthy. Sadly he never left or renounced his Anglican ties which may have fostered the climate necessary for him accepting the blasphemous serpent seed heresy.
